Taatsi
History
Taatsi
is a primeval forest located about 15 kilometres from the village
of Pokka in the Municipality of Kittilä.
Taatsi`s
most impressive natural attraction is the canyon-like break in the
bedrock, which was formed already prior to the Ice Age.
Taatsi
Stone Idol
The
Taatsi Sone Idol was renowned throughout the vast, pre-Christianity
Lapland. Lapp folk from as far as Kautokeino in the distant Norwegian
fells came to make sacrificial ground.
The
Taatsi Stone Idol was first consecrated for deer, fish and later
reindeer.
The
Idol is an ancient relic dating back to an era when Christianity
had not spread as far as Finland. The Idol was worshipped and sacrifices
were made.
Whenever
departing for a deer hunt or fishing trip, the huntsman would first
make good with the Idol by promising a share of the catch. To bring
good fortune, jewellery or money was often sacrificed.
